Extreme 2010: An Antarctic Adventure!
Presented by the University of Delaware with support from the National Science Foundation
From Dec. 1-15, join a University of Delaware research team as they work on the coldest, windiest, driest continent on Earth: Antarctica.
Their base of operations is the U.S. South Pole Station. Their mission, as members of an international research team, is to help build the world's largest neutrino telescope, aptly named "IceCube," nearly two miles deep in the Antarctic ice.
With this novel telescope, researchers hope to detect neutrinos, high-energy particles that zip right through planets and even mysterious black holes. Neutrinos may reveal important information about how the universe works.
The scientists will share their experiences in daily blogs and photos on this Web site, which is now being updated:
www.expeditions.udel.edu/antarctica/. A "Phone Call to the Deep Freeze" also will be made, on Dec. 14, starting at 1:30 p.m. Eastern, linking the researchers with selected classrooms.
